Basement Remodels the Whole Family Will Appreciate
Most homes are built for a general audience. Builders try to make their projects appealing to the largest audience possible. Therefore, whether you have just purchased a new home or have owned your home for a while, there may come a time when you want to pursue a remodel, customizing your home to your lifestyle and needs. A basement remodel may be part of your plan.
Basic Considerations
When you plan a remodel, you need to prepare for the cost. If you want to move things, especially weight-bearing walls, the cost can be higher than building an entirely new addition to your home. In addition, moving walls requires a consultation with an engineer to ensure that your home is properly supported. Therefore, it is best to work with the existing footprint, if possible.
Finishing an unfinished basement is often the least expensive remodel. However, it is best to choose projects that the whole family can benefit from.
Home Theater
If you choose a basement remodel that includes a home theater, be sure that you add sound-absorbing materials to the floor, walls, ceiling and any flat surface in the room. Depending on the height of the ceiling, you may also add stadium-type or raked seating. Make sure you include a great sound system and balance the space as much as possible to ensure your sound is well-balanced throughout the theater.
Game Room
You may also choose to include a game room in your remodel. If you don’t already have plumbing in your space, adding it can be costly. You may consider installing a dumbwaiter to the plans so you can easily transfer dishware, food and drinks up and down the stairs. However, if you do have plumbing, a small sink and bar area may be great additions.
A basement remodel can be exciting and fun. Just be sure that you include features, such as a home theater or game room, that your entire family can enjoy together.
